Lamas: Province located 25 kilometers from
Tarapoto, is an ancient town whose inhabitants preserve ancestral traditions
and customs. The natives of Lamas are of Andean and Quechua-speaking origin and
are by nature cheerful and welcoming.

Corpus
Christi - Spring
The celebration of Corpus Christi begins on the
Thursday following the ninth Sunday after the first full moon of spring in the
northern hemisphere.
Lamas is a city with strong religious traditions
and customs of the feast of Corpus Christi is a feast that brings the entire
population of Lamas together. Many people from the region and the nearby city
of Tarapoto also come to participate in this great food fair that takes place.
Lamas Carnival - February
Lamas Carnival is a pagan festival usually happens on Sundays, which is celebrated by bands of costumed dancers parading through the streets of the town, accompanied by a typical band and a group of young and old fellows, carrying balloons, buckets and water guns, dousing all the people on their way.

Quechua Wayku , "is not a celebration of pagan religious festival. More
than 200 native Quecha communities participate in this festival. At the
beginning, the indigenous women are responsible for preparing the chicken broth
to invite relatives, friends and all who come to the neighborhood Wayku. After
that the hunters carry the stuffed animals and the women in their colorful
costumes begin to dance to traditional music. Then the change is to the young
people who join the party with a tireless endless dancing, walking through the
streets of the various Wayku natal, bringing joy and inviting visitors to be
part of this party.
Holy
Week
Holy Week in Lamas is celebrated with the active
participation of the people and for some years now it has become a nationally
recognized festival. The most popular is the staging of the crucifixion of
Jesus of Nazareth.
Tarapoto festival
"Santa Cruz de los Motilones" patron
saint of the city of Tarapoto - July 16th.
The history of this festival dates back to
pre-Columbian times, when Tarapoto was inhabited by the Motilones de Lamas.
The Motilones Indians (skulls or shaved heads)
were subjected to order and obedience by the Incas and the Spaniards. The
unbreakable spirit of this tribe was reluctant at first to accept a new culture
and a new religion.
At last the Motilones triumphed over the
struggle for freedom and independence of religion and race. All the while they
bowed in reverence to the Motilones on July 16 and since then, year after year
this festival continues in honor of the Motilones Indians.
It is celebrated in the Plaza de Armas with
parades and music shows.
San Roque de Cumbaza -
San Juan-June 24
San Juan is one of the biggest festivals in the
region, the entire population of the Peruvian jungle celebrates together. The
general idea of this festival is that families get together to spend a day at
the river with their "Juane", which has a special preparation that
usually consists of rice, eggs, olives, sacha culantro and chacra hen, wrapped
in leaves that gives the Juane its distinctive flavor. The festival begins at June 23, where everyone are invited to the houses, where the preparation
of juane takes place for the next day. San Roque de Cumbaza is the perfect
place to celebrate this day by the Cumbaza River. Everyone is invited.
