Chazuta is a district of the Province of San Martin. It is located 41 km from Tarapoto, its geographical location is primordial, as it is the gateway to the lower Huallaga river, lying between the culmination of the Cordillera Azul and the Amazon plain, so it is in the center of two conservation areas: Cordillera Azul National Park and Cerro Escalera Regional Conservation Area.

Chazuta is a Castilianized Quechua word that comes from the name Chazutinos, an ethnic group that developed on the left bank of the Huallaga River in the San Martin region between the XV and XVIII centuries.

The Chazutinos ethnic group belonged to the Panatahuas tribe that developed in the Central Huallaga Region. 
Since their origin, the Chazutinos have been and continue to be a Quechua-speaking people.

Those are people with a rich living culture, preserving artistic expressions their pottery, their dances-  native and most representative dance the ¨Shitareo.¨.

Cultural Route

The pottery of Chazuta is unique, for the originality of its designs, colors and iconographies. WASICHAY Cultural and Craft Center where you can see in its exhibition hall the Funeral Urns of the Chazutino Ancestors and its colorful traditional pottery and pottery on the wheel.

 
 

Ecological Paper

During the cultural tour, we will be able to appreciate the work of a group of five Chazutina women who will show us the interesting process of making paper with organic materials such as banana, coconut, atadijo among others. .

 
 

Sulfurous Baths of Chazuta - Yacu

The therapeutic benefits of these sulfur waters are numerous and are eminently a parasiticide, especially recommended in skin diseases, diseases of the bronchi and lungs. An hour walk from Chazuta you can reach these healing waters , surrounded by nature you will find peace and tranquility .

Tununtunumba Waterfalls

 Two hours from Chazuta is an impressive Tununtunumba waterfall,  40 meters high and with three waterfalls. Its name derives from the loud noise produced by the torrent over its enormous base that can be heard from far away.

In the midst of vegetation and colorful birds and butterflies the traveler can take a refreshing bath in the backwaters and natural pools that have formed there.

At its base the torrent reaches 6 meters wide causing a loud noise that can be heard from far away, the name derives from this singularity.

In the lower part and after flowing a few meters the water forms some natural pools and backwaters where it is possible to take a refreshing bath. The vegetation adjacent to the waterfall corresponds to the high forest (abundant trees.) The fauna is abundant in species of birds, butterflies, insects and some small mammals.

Traveling 30 minutes by the majestic Huallaga River, we will be able to appreciate beautiful landscapes with different shades of green that will captivate you.

We will arrive at Shilcayo Island where we will be able to appreciate an organic cocoa farm, which has the different stages of chocolate production.

Here we will enjoy a tasty Caldo de Gallina de chacra (chicken broth). After lunch we will take some time to relax on the beautiful beach on the banks of the Huallaga River.

Arriving in Chazuta we will visit the Mishky Cacao Farmers Association. Here we will taste the cocoa and its derivatives in its maximum expression.
