Information

Kuelap

It is an archaeological site of great value, located in the district of Tingo, province of Luya, in the department of Amazonas. It is a fortress made of stone that concentrates various houses. It is made up of more than 5,000 archaeological buildings that belonged to the kingdom of the Chachapoyas, a pre-Inca culture that existed between 1,100 and 1,350 AD. It functioned as an organized settlement for religious, administrative and ceremonial purposes. Many researchers compare this construction with Machu Picchu due to its architectural development and its political importance. Also, the scenic beauty of this place is enchanting. On the other hand, a great attraction are the cable cars that take visitors from Nuevo Tingo to Kuelap in just 20 minutes. The experience in this itinerary is very rewarding.

Sarcophagi, Tombs of Karajia

  • The Chachapoyas culture is characterized by the richness of its buildings. In general, the residential and monumental buildings are circular and made of stone, their walls have stone reliefs decorated, in several cases, with symbolic figures.
  • The entrance to the main platform must be through narrow alleys, a characteristic that suggests that Kuelap was built for defensive purposes. This citadel had a sophisticated system of roads and drainage of rainwater through channels that ran throughout the complex.
  • The site housed 3,000 people and was home to the ruling elites and shamans. A continuous theme of stone carvings on the walls of the circular structures is a representation of 3 levels into which the community appears to be divided. Symbolizing the three levels of the spiritual world: below the 'underworld', 'middle world' and 'upper world'. Represented by animals: snake, puma and condor respectively. The elite 'shamans' lived on the highest level and everyone else lived below.
  • There is also a double diamond pattern that represents duality. These houses contained many obsidian artifacts as well as many llama bones, suggesting sacrificial activity; no human bones were found in these areas. There is a stone structure on the site that is aligned with the cardinal directions.
  • The new cable car system was inaugurated in March. Whereas the journey used to take about an hour and a half, travelers can now reach the site in about 20 minutes. You can get a great view of the ride - the system is suspended up to 200m in the air as you cross the valleys.
