3 Days -2 Nights – Wildlife Experience Bird Watching Tingana and Wakanki (from 2 people)

Tingana and wakanki bird watching

One of our shorter wildlife tours, perfect for bird watchers and photographers, as well as people who simply want an intimate view of some of Peru's protected wildlife.

Tingana Nature Reserve

This area covers 2,867.74 hectares of natural forest that is temporarily flooded, characterized by an abundant and predominant population of aguaje (Mauritia flexuosa) and renaco (ficus sp) trees. It is a refuge for many wild animals (mainly monkeys and birds) and the natural habitat of vulnerable and endangered species. You will have the opportunity to get to know and explore the forest, appreciate the great variety of plant species such as ferns, vines, orchids, bromeliads, among others. Among the fauna there are mammals such as giant river otters, monkeys, sloths, ring-tailed coatis (members of the raccoon family), anteaters and others.

Wakanqui Center (Moyobamba)

It is a Private Reserve, located 3 km from Moyobamba in the San Martín Region. It borders the Mishquiyaquillo River and contains a wide variety of ecological and bird-watching facilities. It is located at a height of 980 meters when following a path along the Misquiyaquillo, it is possible to reach 1,200 meters above sea level.

Hummingbird feeders

This small center attracts hummingbirds by feeding them sugary solutions that replicate plant nectar. Here, the rufous-crested coquette, as well as many other hummingbirds (black-throated hermit, brown-violet ear, grey-breasted sable, white-chinned sapphire, white-necked jacobin, great-billed hermit, sapphire golden tail). , Fork-tailed Woodnymph, etc.).
Additionally, you may hear and see the endemic Mishana Tyrannulet and several tanagers (small, brightly colored finch-like birds) flying through the trees in flocks of various sizes.

Mishquiyaquillo Ravine Trail

Another important area to visit is crossing the path that ascends to the Mishquiyaquillo. This route is relatively demanding due to the slope. It lasts 3 hours, and you can reach 1,200 meters above sea level. The most interesting birds are found in the elevated parts of the route and are the Speckled Piculet, the Ash-throated Anteater and the Huallaga Tanager. When crossing the Mishquiyaquilo ravine, the traveler crosses different types of forests. Varying levels of tree height and cover result in a diverse habitat that supports a high level of biodiversity. As you go deeper, you may see Lafresnaye's Piculet, Ornate Anteater, Black and White Tody Flycatcher, Fiery-Throated Fruiteater, and Fire-Headed Manaker.

At night it is possible to observe owls. This starts around 6:30 p.m. in the vicinity of the hostel. If you want to do this, it's important to always use an experienced guide to help locate the animals without unduly disturbing or frightening them.
